The Proof Is Out There

This week I want to discuss the new show released by the History Channel that is streaming on Disney+, The Proof Is Out There. This show is hosted by Tony Harris, a journalist who says in the intro of the show he “[has] followed the facts where they take [him]” for over thirty years. The premise of the show is unexplainable phenomenons caught on camera - figuring out what is real, and what is not. He has a series of professionals (forensic video analyst, military analyst, astronomers, marine biologists, theoretical physicists, anthropologists, and more!) who dive deeply into these images and videos, to find the truths behind them. While most of the TV series is debunking fakes, there are a few instances where he and his team have actually found the images/videos to be unexplainable - and totally unknown to science thus far.

Shows such as this are becoming ever more popular in our tech savvy day and age, where people have the ability to capture these phenomena constantly in their pockets. However, the technology to fake these events is also ever present and consistently used - to the point of making it nearly impossible to find the truths hidden within the fakes.

Throughout this series, Tony and his team research many different phenomena from every corner of the Earth. From Bigfoot encounters to mysterious massive “blobs” washed up on shores, radioactive fish, the “Real” Excalibur, time travel - and many many more.

Naturally though, the ones I am most interested in are the UFO and alien encounters.

The idea that shows such as this are becoming so present in our media represents a massive change in societal thinking as well as technological shift. Before the last several years, people who believed in alien life were othered and thought to be nutcases ; but as our technology advances, and we have the opportunity to not just capture the real events, and the ability to manipulate any footage to seem real - but we also have methods in place to find the hidden truths throughout the faked news. Because of this, believers - such as myself - are starting to be taken more seriously. The idea that maybe we're NOT alone in this massive Universe is becoming more scientifically relevant, and socially accepted.

This clip, (from Season 1, Episode 3) is one of the instances of what the creators of this show call a “real” UFO. IT specialist, Richard Hoffman, explains how a plane that was cleared for take-off notices something in the air as it is reaching altitude. They then record this Unidentifiable Object flying through the air, for 3 minutes and 54 seconds. The analysts can find no propulsion system and eventually figure out that it is about 3-5 feet in diameter - definitely not a balloon or drone (as there was heavy wind blowing the opposite direction) and that it is no known bird. The Object flies around in circles, splits into two separate crafts, and then both disappear into the ocean. While some people may refer to this instance as an “imagined alternative” to the reality we currently reside in ; the show is arguing that this video is absolutely real, and that there is no explanation as to what exactly the craft could have been.

The question still stands though - what can we trust? Is Disney+ airing this show, (as well as a few others,) just for the clicks?
