…and even throughout the religious texts of almost every modern-day theology(4).

However, it was during the 1940s that a widespread awareness of the phenomena really swept across the United States - drawing reactions from both society at large, and the United States Government. During World War II, air forces from across the globe began claiming to have had encounters with glowing, fiery balls of light that would intimidate and follow their crafts - displaying flight techniques that were unattainable by any known military of the time. Many of these events were isolated, while others were encountered by numerous witnesses. For instance, the so-called  “Battle of Los Angeles” (5)  which took place on February 24-25, 1942 - of which, reports of unidentified objects over the city prompted a city-wide blackout to be ordered and air raid precautions to be implemented. Tensions were already high from the recent bombing of Pearl Harbor, so when around 2:25 a.m. on February 25, 1942, radar detected an unidentified target approaching the Los Angeles area - an intense anti-aircraft barrage ensued, and thousands of rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition were fired into the sky.

Soon after the Second World War, the United States government created a new project called Operation Highjump(7): a United States Navy Antarctic expedition that was intended for training personnel, testing equipment, and implementing an American influence over the newly created Antarctic territories. By the time this Operation came to play, we already had several expeditions previously mounted in the area, most all conducted by decorated Naval Officer, Admiral Richard E Byrd(8).

In Byrd’s first Antarctic Expedition, he established a base they ended up calling “Little America,” and in the second he claimed international fame by being the first person to fly over the South Pole. However, on one of his many other polar expeditions, Admiral Byrd claims that his craft was taken over by outside sources, and guided down to a hidden underground Nazi base - where he learned of alien life and the Hollow Earth(9), and an entire lost civilization. It would be easy enough to write this off as a total hoax, had it not been for the discovery of his secret diary by his son after his death. According to Byrd’s diary(10), the government ordered Byrd to remain silent about what he witnessed during his Antarctic assignment.

March 11, 1947

“I have just attended a Staff Meeting at the Pentagon. I have stated fully my discovery and the message from the Master. All is duly recorded. The President has been advised. I am now detained for several hours (six hours, thirty- nine minutes, to be exact.) I am interviewed intently by Top Security Forces and a Medical Team. It was an ordeal!!!! I am placed under strict control via the National Security provisions of this United States of America. I am ORDERED TO REMAIN SILENT IN REGARD TO ALL THAT I HAVE LEARNED, ON THE BEHALF OF HUMANITY!!! Incredible! Admiral Byrd was not the only United States military pilot to have an otherworldly encounter through the 1940s however. Captain Thomas F. Mantell(11), a pilot with the Kentucky Air National Guard, is often cited as one of the early cases of a pilot pursuing a UFO with severely tragic consequences. His encounter on January 7th, 1948, began with him and his team on a routine training flight. When reports of a UFO sighting came in to local authorities, he and his team pursued this craft. While the rest of the pilots backed off just in time, Captain Mantell followed the craft to too high an altitude and is said to have passed out from lack of oxygen soon after reporting that the object he was seeing was large and metallic(12).

These cases begin a pattern of reaction and response forming within the United States government to situations that have no clear explanation. In the case of the Battle of Los Angeles, weather balloons were blamed - for Mantell it was debatable whether it was weather balloons or Venus, but it was definitely “not” a UFO - and as far as Admiral Byrd is concerned, the Government completely discredited him and made society believe this once accredited military Admiral was crazy, and his stories were mere conspiracies.

In these events we see the American Government backtracking on sworn statements, and undermining and demeaning their own military when what these men say doesn't line up with their objective. An event happens, we are told one thing, the story changes, and then we hear nothing further. In the moments of silence in between the government works overtime to implement new policies and procedures, to find and hide all evidence, and to make the people who have witnessed these incidents feel just shy of crazy. 

Over the next several weeks I will be posting a new entry every Monday going through some of the most relevant UFO cases that have been covered up and then declassified by our government. We will discuss the cold-hard facts of declassified black-budget projects, as well as the plethora of conspiracies that arise within each event. For the next couple of weeks we will hang out in the 1940s around Roswell New Mexico, with President Harry S Truman in the lead - but we won’t stay there long. From the Truman Administration, we will move on to the supposed coverups of the Eisenhower, and Kennedy, and Lyndon B Johnson Administrations ; and then from there we will move from the executive branch to the legislative branch as we discuss some of the hearings, reports, and panels of the 1950s and 1960s. We will move from there through both the Bush and Clinton Administrations, as well as the psychological warfare boom that started therein. Finally, we will round up the series with a summary of what I am calling The Year of the UAP - 2023, of which we had more sightings and encounters than ever before.
