...it's time to get scientific.

Up to this point, this blog has been full of conspiracy theories and internet “facts,” but I think it is just about time we switch gears and get into some of the real science behind these controversial topics.

This past summer I took one of the most interesting classes that I have thus far. It was called “Habitable Worlds,” and was more or less an Astrophysics, meets Astrobiology, meets Chemistry course. For any of you who have ever known me - you know that Science was never my jam. I loved math (notice the very much past tense there) - but Science and I never really got along… That is until this class. We spent the entire semester learning about all of the stars in our sky - and the markers that could show their planets to be habitable. In my field of 500 stars, (which is about the amount of space that is taken up by your pinky, held at arm's length,) I found a total of close to 50 habitable planets. Planets whose distance from their sun, coupled with their Effective Temperatures and atmospheric chemical composition, showed that life could thrive in their liquid water habitats.

Let me backup first, and explain to you what it is that has gotten me so invested in traveling down this rabbithole. The Allegory of the Cave by Plato is a story of a race of people that lived chained to the wall of a cave. They spend their entire lives looking at shadows dancing across their wall, believing it is reality. It IS their reality. They know of nothing besides these shadows.

Until the day that one man breaks free, and runs outside.

He sees the real sun. Real sky. Real flowers, and leaves, and shadows - and realizes that he has been lied to his entire life. They all have. Those shadows on their wall are merely shadows ; it is what is outside of the cave that is reality. To go back and tell this to his people, however, would be like going back to tell them that the sky is not blue - but a brilliant neon pink. No one would understand. No one will believe.

This mind-blowing alteration of reality is called Ontological Shock, by both Science and Philosophy. The mandatory reshaping of your worldviews, based on newfound information ; the coercion felt by the forced remodeling of facts, of everything we know to be true. These ideas were so much a part of Plato’s life that he wrote an allegory on it. Now I am not saying that I believe this allegory to be proof that we are all living inside of a physical cave, such as it suggests - but perhaps a metaphysical one is not such a far off thought.

Kelly Chase from The UFO Rabbit Hole Podcast said it best. “You think you are starting with UFO’s - And then you end up at the nature of reality and consciousness…and then it becomes this awakening, this drive to find the truth.” I am having my moment of awakening - I have broken my chains, and I’m sprinting as fast as I can out of the cave.

Throughout the next several weeks we will be diving into some of the - in my opinion - more ontologically shocking theories in Physics, and using them as a jumping off point to continue our search through the sky. First up we will be discussing the Fermi Paradox and SETI. From there, we will be looking into Multiverse Theory versus String Theory, Quantum Mechanics, Emergence Theory and the Double Slit Experiment, and Simulation Theory. Lastly we will take a look into how science can still not find an explanation for consciousness, as a matter of fact all formulas and equations . Check out the video below for a short introduction to the Fermi Paradox to get yourself prepared - and know in advance that SETI literally stands for Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence.

Until next time friends,

Keep your eyes to the skies,

Ever searching for the truth.
